The Astell and Kern A&ultima SP4000T is a portable digital audio player built around an idea that should not fit in a pocket: four real vacuum tubes. It is the first player to run the mil-spec Raytheon JAN6418 tube in a quad configuration, with separate dual-tube structures for the left and right channels, a layout previously found only in full-size home tube amplifiers.

It made the cut because the tube count is only the start of the engineering. The four tubes are individually measured, matched for noise and gain, and run in a differential arrangement so common-mode noise cancels out. Around them sits a five-stage anti-microphonic architecture, with the tubes isolated on flexible circuit boards, cushioned in silicone and shielded in copper, to keep vibration from becoming noise. The player also introduces a Triple Tube Mode, switching the same tubes between Triode, Ultra Linear and Pentode operation, which combines with its Triple AMP system and three tube current levels to offer up to 54 sound combinations.

The digital side is equally serious, with dual AK4499EX DACs and dual AK4191EQ processors keeping digital and analogue paths fully separated, full open Android and an octa-core processor. US pricing is US$4,049, rising to US$4,299 for the Copper Edition, which uses high-purity copper under a multi-layer coating and arrived in August 2026\. A Badalassi Carlo leather case completes a package aimed squarely at collectors. Verdict: the most ambitious portable player Astell and Kern has built, and the tube experiment finally done properly.
